Dehydrated Dog Treats; Easy Recipe Liver Jerky

Easy and Affordable Treats To Make For Your Dog

Have you ever bought dog food that contains pieces of freeze dried meat? I have and my dogs love those tiny pieces so much they would rather eat the freeze dried meat and leave the rest behind. Go figure!

I have also bought these freeze dried liver pieces in the past for training purposes. Dogs will do anything for these treats!

This is where I got to thinking….”I can make my own treats”! Matter of fact, I prefer to make my own treats for my fur babies.

For one thing when I make this treat I feel safe giving it to my dogs. I know there are no fillers, I don’t have to worry where this treat is made, and another reason, it’s much cheaper to make it myself.

Although my treats aren’t freeze dried my fur babies love the liver jerky treats I make for them and yours will too.

Just look at their faces! They love these treats!

How To Make Liver Jerky Dog Treats

Making dehydrated liver treats is super easy. For this recipe I use my PowerXL Air Fryer Oven and the three dehydrating trays that come with it.

For best results use a food dehydrator that has an adjustable temperature dial and will maintain a temperature of at least 130 to 140 degrees throughout the drying process. This was a recommendation from the USDA Jerky and Food Safety.

I’m sure this recipe for making liver jerky dog treats can be made in a regular oven it’s just using the Air Fryer Oven is my method of choice.

Ingredients:

Using unbleached parchment paper, cut to size so that it fits the drying rack trays and set aside.

Remove sliced liver from packaging. Rinse under cool water and shake off excess water.

Place meat on cutting board and using a sharp knife, carefully cut liver into pieces and place on unbleached parchment paper covered drying trays. Space pieces apart so they are not touching each other.

Any extra liver that won’t fit on all the trays place in a baggie and put back into the refrigerator until ready to make the next batch. Use preferably within 24 hours.

This next step is very important! Temperature is important when making jerky, not only for dogs but for human consumption too.

Flash Bake

To make dehydrated meats safe for your dog or dogs it is very important to “flash bake” the meat first. The flash bake will rid the meats of any Salmonella and E. coli. Therefore, don’t skip this step because we don’t want any sick doggies.

To flash bake, place trays of meat in the Air Fryer Oven and bake liver at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes.

Dehydrate

After the flash bake has completed click on the dehydrate icon. Turn the temperature between 130 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit and dehydrate meat for up to 8 hours.

Remove dried liver from trays and store in a closed container in the refrigerator for up to one week or can be placed in the freezer for up to two months.

Tip: Keep enough treats for one week in the refrigerator and place the rest in the freezer in separate baggies that will last for a week at a time.

Repeat process until all liver is dehydrated.

This all-natural dehydrated beef liver treat is a good source of protein, rich in vitamins, high in minerals and low in fat.

Dehydrated liver jerky makes the ideal treat for your fur baby.

Use these treats as a reward, as a snack or tear into pieces and add to your dogs food.

  • 1 package beef liver (4 slices of beef liver) I find mine in the meat department in their frozen section. If you can’t find it be sure to ask your butcher.
