Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/3 cup water

Instructions

  1. Prepare Baker's Clay

Place cornstarch, baking soda and water into a medium sauce pan. Cook over medium heat stirring constantly until mixture thickens and loses its water. Remove from heat and transfer clay onto a sheet of plastic wrap. Close plastic wrap and shape into a disc. Sit the clay aside until slightly cooled.

  2. Roll Out Baker's Clay

While the clay is still slightly warm remove from plastic wrap and hand knead a few times until smooth. Then place clay on a dough mat, countertop, or cutting board. Using a smooth rolling pin roll clay out to 1/4-inch thickness. Then use an embossed rolling pin and make one pass over the clay to give the clay some design.

Please note that if these ornaments are rolled out too thin they will be very fragile and susceptible to breaking easily.

  3. Cut Out Designs

Next use cookie cutters to cut out designs. Use the end of a straw to make a hole in the top center of the ornament. Carefully remove outer edge of cut-outs and set aside to reuse. Gently lift up cut clay using a metal spatula and place on a baking pan. Note: messages can also be placed on the back of the ornament. Do this lightly with a toothpick or embossing messages/stamps. To reuse clay just roll into a ball and roll out with rolling pin and make more cut outs like above instructions. This recipe will make about 8 medium sized ornaments.

  4. Bake Baker's Clay Ornaments

Place baking pan in 150 degree Fahrenheit preheated oven for one hour. Remove pan from oven and carefully turn ornaments over. Return ornaments to oven and continue baking for another hour or until the baker’s clay ornaments are dry. Remove pan from oven and allow ornaments to cool. Once cooled put twine or ribbon through hole cut out and tie in a knot to make a hanging ornament.
