Ingredients

  • 5 1/2 pounds apples - for me that was about 10 large apples
  • 4 cups granulated sugar (if that sounds like too much use less sugar if desired)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare Apples

Peel apples, remove core, and chop apples. Since working with a lot of apples and to save time I highly recommend using this pull chopper or something similar. You will be amazed at all the time you have saved by using a chopper. And if you are in need of a reliable peeler I use this one.

  2. Cook Apples

Place chopped apples into a 6-quart crockpot. In a large bowl add 4 cups of granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon allspice and 1/4 teaspoon salt and stir together. Then pour sugar and spices over apples and stir until well combined. Cover and cook apples on high for two hours. Lower the heat and continue cooking apples for 5 more hours stirring every hour.

  3. Blend Apples

After five hours blend apples right in the crockpot using an immersion blender and blend to desired consistency. While blending don’t be alarmed because the apple mixture will start changing its color to golden brown.

  4. Prepare for Canning or Jarring

I like using 8-ounce canning jars to store my apple butter. They also make great gifts as well. I first sanitize nine, maybe ten, canning jars in a large pot of boiling water. Carefully remove jars and water and place on a dry towel. Then to get the apple butter into the warm jars without making a mess I use a canning funnel and just scoop one cup of apple butter into each jar. Wipe lip of jars with moist cloth, add clean canning lids and tightly screw on rings. I then place filled jars into a large pot of boiling water with a washcloth in the water and allow the jars to rest on the cloth for about 10-minutes. Then carefully remove jars and allow to cool on a dry towel on the countertop. During the cooling process the jars should seal themselves within the hour.
