Making Lip Balm Is Fun But Making An All Natural Tinted Lip Balm Is Much More Exciting!
This recipe will not only show you how to make an all natural creamy lip balm but will also share on how to incorporate a cosmetic grade pigment to make a tinted lip balm.
If interested in adding essential oils I talk about that in my original recipe for creamy lip balm.
About The Ingredients Used To Make This All Natural Tinted Lip Balm Recipe
I wanted to share a little bit about the products used in this recipe that makes this ever-so-wonderful all-natural tinted lip balm. What makes it beneficial to your lips and which products I used so you too can make a successful batch of tinted lip balm.
Beeswax Pellets/Pastilles
Beeswax is commonly used in cosmetics. Lip balms that contain beeswax aids in the healing of cracked or dry lips and prevents lips from becoming chapped.
Beeswax is a natural product derived from honeybees.
For the honeybee to obtain 1 pound of beeswax it must ingest 9-10 pounds of honey and visit almost 18-20 million flowers.
Isn’t that absolutely amazing? As the ole saying goes, “Busy as a bee” proves its point.
There are three types of beeswax: yellow, white and beeswax absolute.
- Yellow beeswax is the raw product, fully refined and safe for making lip balms.
- White beeswax is 100% chemical free and naturally bleached through sunlight and moisture. It too is safe for making lip balms. This is the one I prefer.
- Beeswax absolute is yellow and has been extracted from the honeycomb with solvents. Not recommended.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is used primarily for its moisturizing effects. Making it ideal for chapped lips.
Coconut oil can be found in liquid or solid form. I like to keep products in the recipe natural therefore I use this solid form coconut oil.
Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is naturally gentle and non-irritating therefore making it suitable for all skin types.
It not only balances oily skin and soothes sensitive skin but it also hydrates dry skin. Great for dry and chapped lips.
I like to use this 100% pure jojoba oil because it is certified organic, Expeller Pressed, Hexane Free, Paraben Free, and Vegan.
Shea Butter
I did not know this but shea butter actually comes from a nut from the African shea tree.
One of the products widely used in moisturizers, lotions, cosmetics and lip balms is shea butter.
You will find shea butter is solid at room temperature but when melted it has a buttery rich consistency.
One of the products that helps seal in moisture is shea butter making it an excellent ingredient for making lip balms.
I prefer to use this Shea Butter because it is certified Organic, 100% Pure, non-GMO and vegan.
How To Color Lip Balm
There are two way to color lip balms. Either by using food products like beet root powder or mica powders.
As for me, I prefer to use mica powders like the ones below.
Check out all those colors! Having an assortment of colors you can actually make a wide variety of colored lip balms! How fun is that!?
How About We Get Going And Make This All-Natural Tinted Lip Balm Recipe!
Supplies You Will Need:
- Cosmetic Grade Pigment Mica Powder – color of your choice
- Wooden stick for stirring
- Lip Balm Containers
- Glass Dropper
- Labels (optional) – Find a free PDF version of a template to download located on bottom of page
Ingredient: 1 Tablespoon Each
- Beeswax Pellets
- Solid Coconut Oil
- Jojoba Oil
- Shea Butter
- 1/8 teaspoon mica powder
Directions:
Set-up your station
Make sure all your equipment is clean and dry. Open 10 lip balm containers and arrange tubes on a small paper plate. I also use these 3-gram round containers for extra lip balm mixture that won’t completely fill a tube.
Combine ingredients
In a small fry pan over low to medium heat melt together the beeswax, solid coconut oil, jojoba oil and shea butter.
Remove from heat and add mica powder.
Add Mica Powder
Add 1/8th teaspoon of your favorite color mica powder to the melted ingredients and stir using a wooden stick until well combined.
Using a glass dropper, fill each lip balm container as full as you can without overflowing (if the mixture begins to thicken reheat and continue filling containers).
The lip balm will shrink as it cools and may leave a hole down the middle so don’t panic if that happens.
Allow tubes to rest for 5 minutes before handling.
Apply labels and enjoy! Be sure to get the free template below. Look for FREE PRINTABLE LABELS.
