Now here’s a recipe that takes fresh tart cranberries and turns them into a delicious semi-sweet dried fruit using a natural sweetener.

Simple recipe takes fresh sliced cranberries drizzled with maple syrup and dehydrate for approximately ten hours and you’ll have a perfect snack.

November Is The Month To Start Making Dried Cranberries

Cranberries are harvested once a year and you’ll start seeing fresh cranberries the beginning of November.

Every year I buy two or three 2 pound bags of fresh cranberries while they are in season and sometimes I don’t even feel that is enough.

Although I don’t dry or dehydrate all those cranberries I use some for making my fresh homemade holiday cranberry sauce and some to make special treats for the chickens. Shhh…maybe this year I might just add some dried cranberries to a new recipe I have in the works.

Dried cranberries can take the place of raisins and used in foods like salads, cookies, breads, oatmeal or yogurt. I just like to pop ’em in my mouth as a snack.

Back in the day I remember stringing cranberries with popcorn and making garland for the Christmas tree! Now that was fun too!

Making Dried Cranberries Using An Air Fryer

For dehydrating foods I use a similar Power Air Fryer. It fits perfectly on the counter and has three trays for dehydrating. I like the fact that it has one touch digital pre-set settings which makes dehydrating foods fool proof.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cup fresh cranberries
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup

Directions:

This recipe lists 1 1/2 cup fresh cranberries but can easily be doubled or tripled if desired.

Slice Cranberries

Slice cranberries in half on a cutting board. Notice inside each cranberry there are a gazillion seeds. Well, maybe not a gazillion but there sure are a lot of seeds for such a tiny berry.

This next step is probably not necessary but I like to remove the seeds from the cranberries.

To do this I hold the halved berry with my fingers on my dominant hand with the pulp facing away and give my wrist a good shake into the sink and the seeds generally shake out.

Most times all the seeds will fall out but if they don’t try bouncing the berry on the cutting board or use the tip of a knife and scrape it out.

Coat Cranberries

Place sliced berries in a medium sized bowl. Pour maple syrup over cranberries and toss until completely coated. Or, place cranberries in a jar and then pour maple syrup into jar. Cover with lid and shake jar to coat all berries.

Dehydrate

Place cranberries on dehydrator drying tray covered with parchment paper.

Dehydrate cranberries at 125 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 hours. If cranberries are not dry enough to your liking feel free to dehydrate longer.

Remove dried cranberries and enjoy! Store cranberries in a jar with a lid until ready to use. I like to keep mine in the refrigerator just to be safe.
