Grooming Dogs At Home

Before you decide to start grooming your dog at home you will want to make sure to buy the best dog clippers.

Dog clippers are not cheap. Well, there are some dog clippers that are cheap but from my experience, you get what you pay for. That’s right! I know because I ended up buying two different types of clippers before I found the right one.

Professional Groomers Can Be Expensive

I am by no means a professional dog groomer. Just one day I got tired of paying high prices to get my dogs groomed and decided I could do it myself.

Taking my dogs to the groomer was an event we did about every 3 months. That really became expensive especially when taking two at a time. I would spend nearly $150.00 every three months. That was more than what I was spending on my own hair!

Yeah, it may be convenient to load the dogs up in the car and take them to a professional groomer but it’s quite a shock on the pocketbook! So, I decided I was going to start grooming my dog’s myself.

Not All Clippers Are Created Equal

Buying clippers can be overwhelming as there are many types to choose. My first clippers I believe were a two speed and I spent about $70.00. They worked well for about the first five grooming sessions but then they would hardly cut even the slightest hair. It was as if the blades were dull so I thought they needed sharpened or aligned.

Sharpened? After only five cuttings? That’s crazy!

So, I ended up getting the blades sharpened. When I got them back they worked better but after a couple more grooming sessions they started acting up and were not cutting the hair very easily again! Grrr…I was fed up!

I ended up purchasing a new pair of clippers. This time I think I spent about $100.00. Those too petered out after a few cuts. There had to be some type of blade that wouldn’t get dull so quickly. After some research I finally found what I feel are the best dog clippers for grooming dogs at home. It wasn’t only about the blades but about the clippers as well.

You Get What You Pay For

Remember what I said earlier? You get what you pay for? Well, these clippers that I use now aren’t the most expensive but they aren’t cheap either and I think they are the best dog clippers for me.

They have been an excellent investment and have saved me a ton of money in the long run. Actually, I am very proud to say these new clippers have saved me around $1,000.00 and they are still going strong!

The previous clippers I was using had only two speeds. I’m not going to share the brand I was using at the time as I am not here to bash another company. What I am here for is to share with you what I feel is the best dog clippers.

The Best Dog Clippers

The clippers I use now that I consider the best have 5 Speeds, a more powerful motor, and detachable blades.

Having the detachable blade is really nice as it gives you the advantage of selecting the right blade for the right trim or cut.

The clippers came with a size 10 CeramicEdge blade which is a very close cut similar to that of a crew cut. I use the size 10 blade on the legs and belly and a 7FC blade on the rest of the body. See blade chart below for other available sizes.

There are four different colors to choose. When I bought mine I don’t recall having a choice of colors but I like them all. And the confetti one with the doggie on it is adorable. Wouldn’t you agree?

As I said there are 5 speeds. The lower speeds are for cooler running and clipping around sensitive areas and the higher speeds leave a prettier coat finish. The powerful rotary motor runs at 2500 – 4500 SPM. Oh yeah, the blades are CeramicEdge® meaning the blade runs cooler and lasts longer. Another perk about this clipper is that it has detachable blades which make for easy changing and cleaning.

Great article. I use the Andis to groom my fur babies too. I have had mine a few years and I love them. I decided to get new blades for them this year and they have been discontinued. I guess it’s time for an upgrade. Mine were only 2 speed. Having a 5 speed would be awesome. Thank you for the information.
