There’s nothing better than homemade syrup for waffles or pancakes.

I found out by accident that homemade syrup is a fantastic alternative to store-bought syrup. It’s even easy to make and does not contain high fructose corn syrup or any of those other yucky ingredients. Several years ago we were cooking a cowboy breakfast outside over the open fire pit. It was really a nifty idea. We fixed scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon, pancakes and even had a little coffee pot out there.

We had the whole nine yards for the perfect breakfast.

Cowboy Breakfast

And then I literally freaked!  We did not have any syrup for the pancakes!

Yes, I panicked. Quickly running into the house I rumbled through the cabinets and came upon some brown sugar and butter flavoring. I was in awe.

This is where my recipe begins

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/2 Cup granulated sugar
  • 1 Cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon maple flavor
  • 1/2 teaspoon butter flavor
Note: if you only have one flavoring that is fine but make sure to use a full teaspoon. When I initially made my first batch of syrup I only had butter flavor on hand and that worked perfect. Over the years I started adding maple flavor along with the butter flavor. I don’t know if I can really tell the difference but either one or the other or both will be fine.

Instructions:

  1. In a sauce pan add water and sugars.
  2. Over medium heat bring to a boil stirring until dissolved.
  3. Boil for 3-5 minutes, stirring often.
  4. Remove from heat, add flavoring.
  5. As the syrup cools it will thicken.
  6. Store in a sealed glass jar.
  7. Enjoy!
Note:  You can store the syrup in the refrigerator but it is not necessary because of the high sugar content. We store ours in the cabinet and warm it up prior to serving.
