What Apples Make The Best Chips

Not all apples make the best chips. When making apple chips choose an apple that is not too juicy and nor too dry.

For this recipe I like using Red Delicious apples or Jonathan apples. Seriously, they make the best apple chips.

Red Delicious Apples

I have had luck with both the Red delicious and Jonathan apples as they tend to have the perfect moisture content for making crispy apple chips.

Making apple chips is fun and it also makes the house smell wonderful.

The best part about making apple chips is you don’t even need to use a ton of apples.

One apple can make around 30 chips. So, I usually use two apples and three baking pans. You might even catch me using my Emile Henry Glazed Pizza Stone!

Ingredients (Just Two Ingredients):

  • 2 apples ( Jonathan or Red Delicious Apples)
  • Ground cinnamon

Directions:

Preheat oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Rinse and dry apples prior to slicing.

Slice Apples

To get apples cut evenly I highly recommend using an adjustable mandolin slicer with a hand guard to protector yourself from getting cut. Or even better wear a cut resistant glove for additional safety measures.

Do a test run first to check for the cut thickness of the apple. Adjust blade as needed.

Holding the apple firmly with your dominant hand while holding onto the mandoline with your other hand.

Actually, hold the apple on top, by where the stem is, and glide it over the blade of the mandolin a couple times to check the thickness of the cut. Readjust the blade as needed.

Tip: Don’t make apples too thin because they will stick to the pan during the drying or baking process and don’t make them too thick because it will take for-ever for them to crisp up. Matter of fact if they are too thick the apples will be chewy.

Once you find your happy medium thickness of apple continue to slice the entire apple.

There is no need to core the apple but if you prefer use an apple corer prior to slicing.

I do not core my apples prior to slicing because I like getting that pretty little star design in the middle. Be sure though to remove the seeds after slicing the apples and prior to baking.

Dust with cinnamon

Lay sliced apples evenly on a piece of parchment paper. Sprinkle with ground cinnamon. Then flip apples over and sprinkle the other sides.

No need to heavily coat apples with cinnamon as a light dusting will also give great flavor.

Bake

Bake apples for one hour. Remove from oven and gently lift slices from pan and flip over. Continue baking apples for thirty minutes or even up to one more hour.

Remove from oven and allow to cool. As the apples cool they will begin to crisp up.

Only store completely cooled apple chips in a sealed container. Enjoy!
