Deep Fried Hush Puppies Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 box Jiffy corn muffin mix (8.5 ounce box)
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk – homemade buttermilk recipe
  • 1/2 cup grated yellow onion
  • peanut oil for frying

Directions:

Combine ingredients

Place all ingredients in a medium bowl and stir by hand until well combined.

Refrigerate

Refrigerate mixture for at least 1 hour.

Heat deep fryer

Heat peanut oil to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. I highly recommend using a temperature controlled deep fryer opposed to a deep pot on the stove. I use the Farberware 4L Double Deep Fryer. Although it is exclusively available at Walmart this one here is very similar to the one I use. If not using a dep fryer you can use a dutch oven or a deep pan.

Scoop batter

Scoop up the batter with a cookie scoop and gently place the batter into the hot oil. I usually cook 5 to 7 at a time. Careful not overcrowd the batter in the fryer or you could have a mess on your hands.

Cook

Allow the batter to cook in the hot oil for 3-5 minutes or until golden brown. This recipe will make around 20 – 25 hush puppies. Keep an eye on those pups. If you’re lucky you might even catch them doing somersaults in the hot oil. LOL It’s okay to flip them a few times with the spider strainer while frying, just be careful. Tip: When taking the hot food out of the oil you’ll want to be prepared. So, line a baking sheet with paper towels and then place a baking rack on top of that and set aside until ready to use.

Remove From Oil

Carefully remove hush puppies from oil with the spider strainer. Scoop out hush puppies and place them on the baking rack. Complete above steps until all batter is fried.
