Croutons With The Perfect Crunch

salad croutons

There’s never been a crouton I have ever liked until I made these homemade low salt garlic croutons with the perfect light and airy crunch! Perfection!

Make garlic croutons in as little as 20 minutes. Ingredients include french bread, olive oil, fresh garlic, salt and freshly ground pepper.

I have always loved the flavor of croutons but feared breaking my teeth because the majority of croutons I have tried were usually hard as rocks! Can you relate?

Low Salt Garlic Croutons

Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf fresh garlic bread or ciabatta bread
  • 4 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large cloves garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Slice Bread

Using a bread knife to cut bread into 1/2 pieces or smaller if desired. Cut enough bread to fill sheet cake pan.

Note: If using a long piece of french bread only cut up half of the bread. If you want to use the whole loaf make 2 batches of the oil mixture. If you are using ciabatta bread you will probably want to use the whole piece of bread.

Place bread on a foil lined 12×18 sheet cake pan evenly distributed and make sure no one piece is on top of the other. Bake bread for 5 minutes.

Prepare Olive Oil Mixture

In a small bowl combine oil, salt and freshly ground pepper. I got this new pepper grinder for Christmas that grinds pepper just by turning it upside down. It’s a pretty cool gift!

Run garlic through a garlic press and add to oil mixture.

Remove bread from oven and drizzle oil mixture over chopped bread. Toss croutons until well coated.

Bake / Toss / Bake

Bake 5 minutes.

Remove from oven and toss croutons. Return to oven and bake 5 more minutes.

Remove from oven and allow to cool completely while on the baking sheet.

Serve garlic croutons with salad or just eat them as a snack!

Store croutons in a closed container. Enjoy!
