The First Steps To Peeling Hard Boiled Eggs

The first step to achieve peeling the perfectly smooth hard boiled egg starts with three easy steps in egg preparation.

  • Steaming eggs is the preferred method to achieving easy to peel eggs. There are several different ways of steaming eggs but I’ve found the easiest method is by using an egg cooker.
  • Allowing the egg to breathe during the cooking process. This is achieved by using an egg piercer that comes with an egg cooker. If you don’t have an egg cooker you can use this egg piercer. Eggs are pierced prior to steaming.
  • And the final step is to cool eggs immediately after steaming in an ice bath.

Following these three easy step is just the beginning to the art of easily peeling hard boiled eggs.

Some people have said to use older eggs because as the egg ages an air pocket is formed inside the shell making the egg easier to peel. I don’t really agree with using older eggs. We always use fresh eggs that come from our backyard chickens and have had no problems with peeling eggs. I always pierce the eggs, steam them and then give them an ice bath. I have always had success at easily peeling hard boiled eggs by using this process for many years.

The Final Steps To Peeling Hard Boiled Eggs

After the eggs have been in the ice bath for about 3-5 minutes remove one egg and gently tap the egg on countertop and begin gently rolling the egg back and forth to crackle the entire shell. Take care not to push too hard on the shell or the boiled egg will crack or break inside the shell. After the entire shell is cracked into a gazillion pieces the shell should remove easily. Complete all hard boiled eggs with this same process.
