Take a normal jean jacket and turn it into a stunning denim & lace masterpiece with a few minor changes.

I’m glad I captured your attention. I want you to know that I get so many compliments when I wear this denim & lace jean jacket that it’s crazy! People absolutely LOVE IT! When I tell them I made this jacket they totally flip and ask me where my Shop is located. Funny thing is, I don’t have a Shop. With that being said I thought I would share with you on how to make your own denim & lace jean jacket.

If you’d prefer to purchase an already made jacket or get other ideas on designing your own check out this cute denim jacket on Etsy here. You can also check out the Amazon jackets here. These style jackets can cost anywhere from $60 USD up to around $200 USD. Anyway, let me show you how you can make your own denim & lace jean jacket for less than $25 USD.

Supplies For Making A Lace & Denim Jean Jacket

I am going to share with you the supplies that I highly recommend to use for making this jacket.

  • Jean Jacket: use one that you already have that you don’t mind cutting up or try shopping at a thrift store. I got my jean jacket at a thrift store for $8.00 USD.
  • Embroidered Lace: if you have embroidered lace on hand that you like that’s perfect. I used this multifloral tulle lace. This one comes in two yards which is way plenty. I even have enough left over to do a pair of jeans.
  • Large self healing sewing mat. This mat is a life changer! Just place the fabric on the mat and cut right on it.
  • Rotary cutter: I highly recommend this rotary cutter instead of using scissors. Cuts the fabric like a charm!
  • Sewing Machine: I have this Singer Heavy Duty that I use.
  • The basics: sewing pins, colored thread, sewing chalk, and a sewing measuring tool.

How to Make a Denim & Lace Jean Jacket

Step One: Prepare Garment

Decide the areas on which you’ll cut out. Only cut fabric and not seams already in place. Then make chalk markings measured 1 1/2-inches from the center seam.

Step Two: Cut Out Garment

Place your jacket on top of the sewing mat and use your rotary cutter to cut out the fabric at the chalk markings. Save the material that is cut out to use as a pattern to cut the lace or tulle. Tip: I only cut one pattern out at a time, sew in the tulle, and move onto the next cutting.

Step Three: Cut Tulle or Lace and Prepare to Sew

Now, place the tulle or lace on top of the sewing mat with the design facing up. Place your cut out pattern face up on top of the desired area. Cut 1-inch outside the entire pattern. The sewing mat makes this part easy because the mat has indicated markings. Then, place the cut out lace or tulle design facing up on a flat surface and place the jacket underside on top of the tulle and pin into place.

Step Four: Sewing Tulle or Lace to Jean Jacket

The goal for this jacket is to make fringe around the lace which will be accomplished after several washings. The amount or depth of fringe will depend on where the garment is sewed. I made my stitching and used the presser foot as my guide. I threaded my machine with blue thread and used a lime green thread in my bobber. Below is the complete project (left to right: back side, left front, right front and left arm. To make my jacket unique, I did not do the right arm). I have seen where someone used Stitch Witchery instead of actually sewing the lace in place. I do not recommend using Stitch Witchery for this project. For one thing, I don’t think you will get a consistent fringe and sometimes the Stitch Witchery may not hold for the duration of the garment.
