Recipe For Making Fresh Spinach On The Stove Top

Cooking fresh spinach is such a breeze! It’s super easy and can be ready to eat in less than five minutes (that’s <5 minutes)!

This recipe only uses 3 ingredients; fresh spinach, water and garlic for seasoning.

If you aren’t growing your own spinach it is highly recommended to use fresh spinach from your local grocer or farmers market. This recipe is not recommended for canned or frozen spinach.

Grow Your Own Spinach

Although spinach is usually available year round it does taste best when picked from your own garden. I don’t know what it is, maybe the freshness and knowing “you grew it” but it does taste better.

Spinach is one of the most nutritious and cold-hardy vegetables. Spinach seeds germinate and grow best in the cool weather of spring or fall.

Maybe you’ll be as surprised as I was to know there are different types of spinach that can be grown in the garden.

Fresh Spinach Recipe

Although fresh spinach is good by itself it’s even just as tasty as cooked. I hope you find this recipe as easy as claimed.

My favorite dish for serving fresh cooked spinach is with my easy pork chop skillet recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 10 ounces Fresh spinach
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Garlic salt for seasoning

Directions:

For any type of spinach, store bought or fresh, I will always rinse in cold water prior to cooking. You don’t have to do this step but that is my practice.

I know, the store bought spinach is clearly marked as “washed 3 times”, but I still rinse it. I seem to rinse everything prior to cooking. Must be the germ phobia in me. LOL!

Place water in a large fry pan that has a lid. Place the entire 10 ounce of spinach in the pan.

It may appear the spinach won’t fit and it won’t but place all of it in there. It should look like a mountain of spinach.

Place the lid on the pan making sure all the spinach is tucked under the lid.

Cook spinach over medium high heat for approximately 3 minutes or until spinach is well wilted.

Remove lid and sprinkle with a little bit of garlic salt and cook for 1 more minute.

Serving Cooked Spinach

After the spinach has cooked now what?! Cut the spinach like you would a pie. I use a stainless steel spatula similar to this one to cut the spinach while it’s in the pan. If you use a knife to cut it do not cut in a sawing motion. Just push the knife down onto the cooked spinach to make the cuts.

Having a nice smooth cut makes for an excellent presentation. Serve immediately and enjoy!
