Making a marinara sauce is the perfect dish for a Meatless Monday.

Actually, this is one of my favorite recipes to make on one of those, “I need something quick and easy” kinda days!

Marinara Pasta Sauce Recipe

Another perk for this recipe is it can have a chunky texture or can be made as a thin sauce. It’s whatever preference desired.

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium yellow onion
  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes or 1/4 teaspoon for less spice
  • 1 (28 ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans fire roasted tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon dried Italian seasoning
  • fresh grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

TIP: Make this marinara sauce more authentic by using fresh herbs for seasoning in place of dried Italian seasoning. Add 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves chopped and 1 Tablespoon fresh chopped oregano.

Directions:

In a large pot saute onions in olive oil for about 2 minutes or until soft. Add dried red pepper flakes and garlic. Cook over low heat for about 1 minute.

Add both type of tomatoes to the large pot along with salt, pepper and spices or fresh seasonings.

Using a hand-held immersion blender blend for about 15 seconds or until desired consistency. I like mine a little chunky.

Cook over medium heat for about 30 minutes.

Serve over your favorite pasta or however you plan on using this marinara sauce and enjoy!
