Pura Vida

 “pure life”

The beautiful Pura Vida colorful handmade bracelets immediately take me back to the summer of 1996 when I took a trip to a Third World Country.

My Adventure

I joined a small team of medical professionals that summer and helped provide medical assistance to a small village in Acatanango, Guatemala. The team I was with ended up seeing 1,800 patients in 4 days. It was crazy and I loved it! Upon our arrival to the airport a school bus picked us up and drove us up the mountains to a small village. As we arrived to our destination the patients were lined up waiting for us.

Arrival in Guatemala

Men, women and children came from miles to see doctors and nurses. The medical team gave vaccinations and treated many illnesses. The picture below of the young girls and children wearing their colorful skirts is what reminds me of the Pura Vida colorful handmade bracelets.

Helping The Community

There was one major illness Dr. J and I treated. An elderly gentleman was brought to the clinic by his two adult daughters for treatment to his lower leg. He had a very bad case of a non-healing diabetic ulcer that covered his entire right leg. After treating this gentlemen his daughters were very grateful for the care we provided their father. They gave us a blessing and gifted the doctor and myself each with a beautiful handmade wrap.  It was their way of showing their appreciation and a very touching moment for me.  Gift from loving family

I recall seeing women in the village wearing these wraps carrying their small young children on their backs and some times in the front.

Pura Vida’s Story About Griffin and Paul

My experience is somewhat similar to the story of Griffin Thall and Paul Goodman in that they traveled to a Third World Country. They took a college graduation trip to Costa Rica in the summer of 2010. That trip turned into a life-changing business venture for Griffin and Paul.

Griffin and Paul crossed paths with two bracelet artisans named Jorge and Joaquin. The colorful handmade bracelets seemed to capture the essence of their journey. At the time, Jorge and Joaquin were living in poverty. They slept with their family in a single crammed room with three beds. After seeing this, Griffin and Paul asked Jorge and Joaquin to make 400 bracelets to take home with them. No one would have expected for this casual encounter to grow into the successful partnership that it is today.
