Jerk rice and peas is a traditional dish loved by the Jamaican culture. This savory rice recipe is full of flavor and often served with chicken.

This side dish rice recipe uses my flavorful Jamaican Jerk spices and black beans instead of actual green peas. Plus, diced onion, red bell pepper, garlic, broth, butter and jasmine rice.

If you don’t use peas in Jamaican Rice then why is it called Rice and Peas?

That is a great question! I even asked myself prior to making this recipe. Through my research, the Jamaican Peas are actually red kidney beans. Many and if not all Jamaican Rice recipes recommend using red kidney beans and dried beans opposed to canned because that is the Jamaican traditional way. As for me, I am not going to take 8-hours to soaking dried beans to make this recipe therefore, I have decided to switch it up and use canned black beans.

What do you serve Jamaican Jerk Rice with?

I suppose this dish could be served alone but I prepare Jamaican Jerk Rice and Peas with my oven baked Jamaican Jerk Chicken. You can find that yummy recipe here.
