Hot Mulled Cider

If there is one other beverage besides hot chocolate to fix during the fall/winter months it’s this Winter Wassail, also known as hot spiced cider or mulled cider.

When To Make Winter Wassail

You want to start making winter wassail beginning in the fall season when fresh milled apple cider becomes available. Sometimes as early as the end of October through the end of December.

Apple cider can usually be found in the produce section of your local grocery store. Many times not in the refrigerated section but on a shelf. I use Louisburg Cider Mill cider.

Once the cider container has been opened it must be refrigerated though. So, before the season gets over you may want to buy two gallon containers and keep one for January and February when it’s super cold outside.

Yes, winter wassail is perfect for sipping during the cold months. Something about this warm spiced beverage warms the soul!

I usually start making Winter Wassail in November and serve at Thanksgiving. It’s a nice warm beverage to start the holiday season.

What All Is In Winter Wassail?

Winter Wassail starts out with 100% apple cider. Not apple juice but unfiltered, no preservative, no sweeteners or any other additive of any kind, apple cider.

This recipe calls for 1/2 gallon but you may just want to get the gallon container. Oh heck, get two gallons and save one for January or February. Just saying!

Other ingredients include: orange juice, cinnamon sticks, real ginger (not the ginger spice), whole cloves, juniper berries, fresh apples, oranges and fresh cranberries. Did you notice? No Added Sugar!

The best part of making Winter Wassail is you just throw everything into a slow cooker and let it do it’s thing! And the second best thing about making this wonderful mulled cider is how tasty it is!
