A great comfort food for everyone! The perfect recipe for homemade creamy tomato soup that is easy to make and super tasty!

This recipes calls for canned tomatoes but if you have fresh tomatoes feel free to use those. Other ingredient used to make this yummy homemade tomato soup include fresh onions, garlic, dried Italian spices (oregano and basil), chicken broth and heavy whipping cream.

What Goes With Tomato Soup

Sandwiches are a great to-to when serving tomato soup. Our family favorite sandwich to pair with tomato soup is grilled cheese sandwiches.

Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

When I make grilled cheese I slather a layer of mayo on both sides of the bread, lay the first piece of bread in a warmed skillet, add a slice of American cheese, slather the other piece of bread and place that slice on top of the cheese. Cook over medium heat for about 3 minutes or until there is a nice light brown crust to the bread and then flip it over and continue cooking to brown the other side.

Although there are hundreds of ways to make a grilled cheese sandwich below are a few types of cheeses, breads and add in’s in case you want to try something different when making a grilled cheese sandwich. Mix and match it up for a unique flavor!

Creamy Tomato Soup Recipe

Ingredients:

Although this recipe calls for canned tomatoes you can use fresh tomatoes too.

  • 1 14.5 ounce can diced tomatoes
  • 1 14.5 ounce can Fire Roasted diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 small yellow onion sliced
  • 1 clove garlic sliced
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • fresh basil for garnish (optional)
  • Oyster crackers for garnish (optional)

TIP: If you have an abundance of fresh tomatoes, any type, from your garden use a kitchen scale and weigh out 3 pounds of tomatoes instead of canned. Having a kitchen scale is very handy in the kitchen. I use mine all the time. Just rinse the garden fresh ripe tomatoes, cut in half, place on a baking sheet and bake or roast for 25 minutes in a 450 degree Fahrenheit preheated oven.

Instructions:

In a medium to large stock pot add tomatoes, garlic, onion, dried spices and simmer over medium heat until onions are tender.

Using a hand blender, blend all ingredients while in the stock pot until smooth or to whatever consistency you desire.

Add whipping cream to soup and simmer over low heat for a few minutes and serve in these soup mugs or soup bowls.
