THE BLOODY MARY

When it comes to a Bloody Mary I mean business! It must be full bodied with a nice thick consistency. None of that watery stuff. It needs to be the kind of thickness that will stick to your ribs as you take that first gulp!

If there is one beverage that I am super duper critical of it’s the Bloody Mary! Matter of fact, I can’t even bring myself to ordering a Bloody Mary at a public restaurant because I just know it will not be as good as the one I make at home and have come to love.

Alcohol vs Non-Alcoholic

Most Bloody Mary’s are made with some form of alcohol like that of vodka. As for me, I prefer the non-alcoholic version of a Bloody Mary. You see, I like to shoot for the more natural flavor of this tomato, horseradish, peppery, celery, spicy non-alcoholic version of the Bloody Mary!

The Cheater Bloody Mary

I have tried to make Bloody Mary’s from total scratch. I blended my own tomatoes, adding all types of the “right” ingredients like garlic, horseradish, celery, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, lemon and lime juice and other spices but it never turned into much except a big time consuming and expensive mess!

So, I began exploring Bloody Mary mixes. Go ahead, call me a cheater! But let me tell you, I have tried so many mixes and I have narrowed it down to two of the best Bloody Mary mixes. EVER! Matter of fact, you can thank me later.

The Best Bloody Mary Mix

The Best Bloody Mary Mix; Non-Alcoholic Beverage

Like I said, there are two Bloody Mary mixes that can be found in my cabinets. Two, because if I can’t find one of them then hopefully I can find the other one.

Back in the 90’s I fell in love with the brand Red Eye Horseradish Texas Style Bloody Mary Mix. It has a kicking flavor! No need to add anything but a few garnishes and a straw. Well, at least in my book anyways.

The “next best” Bloody Mary Mix in the world is Major Peters! There are two types of the Major Peters brand to choose, Original and The Works. Now, if you’re a true Bloody Mary connoisseur like me, I highly recommend The Works!

Just by looking at either of these bottles you can see the ingredients floating in the juices! They are not all sitting at the bottom of the bottle. That’s what I’m talking about. Having a full bodied beverage.

Garnishments For Bloody Mary’s

Garnishing a Bloody Mary is all about preference. Some people get carried away with topping their Bloody Mary with all kinds of goodies. Matter of fact you would even think their Bloody Mary was their meal! Although the options are endless when it comes to dressing up a Bloody Mary, below are a few recommendations you may want to consider. If you have additional recommendations please share with us in the comments.

Spiced Rim For Bloody Mary Beverage
Rim of glass coated with Spiced Rim Salt! Yummy!
  • Fried Bacon on a stick
  • Italian cold meats (salami, prosciutto, or soppressata)
  • Coat the rim of the glass with a Spiced Rim Salt. This is a must!
  • Celery ribs
  • Lime slices
  • Olives…Big Olives or Blue Cheese Stuffed Olives
  • Caper Berries
  • Pepperoncini
  • Spicy Green Beans or Spicy Pickled Green Beans (these are awesome but so hard to find). Had my first spicy green bean on a Bloody Mary in New Orleans! Now I’m hooked!
  • Dill pickle spears (look for spicy dills) Yum Yum!
  • Cheese cubes or mozzarella on a bamboo cocktail skewer
  • Cooked chilled shrimp and make it a Shrimp Wrecked Mary!
