Is This Broccoli Salad Recipe Really That Good?
Have you ever come across a dish and say, “I just can’t get enough”? That is exactly how I feel with this Broccoli Salad. I just can’t get enough! I always go back for seconds and sometimes thirds. Yes, it is that good!
The Buffet
I first came across a broccoli salad while visiting a buffet. It looked good and tasted good but I found myself picking out a few of the ingredients, pushing them aside and piling them to one side of my plate. I picked them out because I didn’t care that much for them. To me, they didn’t belong in this salad. At least not for me. That is when I got the idea to create the perfect broccoli salad to my liking.
Let me talk a minute about buffets. I actually hate going to buffets. Why? Because I am somewhat of a germ freak. Yes, it totally freaks me out just thinking about the person that helped themselves to a dish before me that I am about to grab the same utensil they touched and put food on my plate. My mind starts racing with all kind of questions. Did they have clean hands, am I going to get their germs and get sick, did someone laugh or talk over the food. Do you get where I am coming from? I hate buffets but I will go to them. If I never have gone to this buffet I would never have created this broccoli salad. So, there is a happy ending!
What’s in the Broccoli Salad?
Four of the ingredient can be found in the produce department. You will need 1 banded bunch of fresh broccoli that contains two heads or 1 1/2 pounds, green grapes, celery, and a red onion. Other ingredients include golden raisins. I suppose you could use regular raisins if you have those on hand but I make mine with the golden type. You will also need sunflower seed kernels, mayonnaise, plain yogurt or my Crème Fraîche , sugar and apple cider vinegar.
Making the Salad
This is one of the easiest salads to make. Combine all the produce together along with the raisins and nuts in a large bowl.
For the sauce combine the mayonnaise, yogurt or Crème Fraîche, sugar, vinegar and whisk until smooth. Pour this over the broccoli mixture and toss until all ingredients are well coated. Chill at least for one hour prior to serving. If you allow it to sit for eight hours or overnight it seems to taste better. Either way it is phenomenal. Warning: you may not have any leftovers as it will get gobbled up in a New York second!
I like to serve my broccoli salad in these serving bowls. It fits perfect and looks pretty.
