Why Not! Look at that yummy picture!

I was inspired to make mint chocolate chip gelato because every time we go out for pizza my husband always treats us with a small cup of mint gelato for dessert.

One day, you know like when the light bulb goes on? I said, “I’m going to make homemade mint chocolate chip ice cream honey! So I did and it is wonderful! Wonderful! Therefore, I am going to share my recipe with you. I do hope you enjoy!

What is the difference between ice cream and gelato

Wait a minute! I can hear some of you saying about right now something like, “but above you said gelato?.”

Yes, I did say gelato was what we got at the pizza parlor and that was what I was planning on making but then I questioned myself wondering what’s the difference between gelato and ice cream?

Well, gelato starts out with a similar base as ice cream but has a higher proportion of milk and a lower proportion of cream and eggs or it may not have any eggs at all.

Plus, it is churned at a slower rate than ice cream. Therefore, I can’t call this recipe gelato because it does have more cream than milk and it has 6 egg yolks.

It is so fun making homemade ice cream! For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to make my own ice cream but there was always one drawback.

I didn’t want to do the chore of churning and churning. That just did not appeal to me. At all!

Hand Churn or Electric? Which Do You Prefer?

Many times when I have seen people make ice cream it has been a group effort where everyone would take turns churning especially all the little kids.

Since I come from a small family I have this mentality of “let’s just get this done”! So, I decided my best bet was to purchase an electric maker that makes ice cream.

After some intense research I went with this powerful electric ice cream maker that has the capability of making up to 6 quarts in like 15 to 40 minutes. Now, I look forward to making homemade ice cream every year!

When I make ice cream I very seldom make 6 quarts unless its for a family gathering like Memorial Day, Fourth of July or Labor Day. Usually I will make just 1 quart. That seems to be the perfect size. At least for us it is.

Making ice cream is actually easy. All you have to do is prepare the cream, put the liquid in the canister, pack with ice and ice cream salt, plug it in and let it do its thing!

Let’s Get Busy An Make This Creamy Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream (divided)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 10 fresh mint sprigs (if you don’t have fresh mint these can be found in the grocery produce section with all the herbs)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Creme de Menthe flavoring
  • 2-4 drops green food coloring (optional)
  • 1/2 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 10# bag cubed ice
  • 2 4# boxes ice cream salt

Instructions:

Bring 1 cup heavy whipping cream and milk to a gentle boil. Remove from heat and add mint springs. Cover and allow to steep for 30 minutes.

Milk and mint steeping

Strain milk discarding mint and return milk to heat and simmer.

In a medium bowl combine egg yolks and sugar. Beat with an electric hand mixer until yolks turn pale in color (about 5 minutes).

Add the other 1 cup heavy whipping cream to egg mixture and gently whisk to combine. Slowly add egg mixture to simmering milk mixture.

Cook on low heat stirring constantly until thick. You will know the mixture is done by doing the “wooden spoon test”.

Wooden Spoon Test

Coat the backside of a wooden spoon with the mixture and using your finger make a swipe across the backside and if the liquid holds its shape the mixture is done.

Remove from heat and strain liquid through sieve into a medium bowl.

Ice Bath

Prepare an ice bath by filling a large bowl with ice and some water. Place the medium bowl filled with the mixture on top of the ice bath.

While the mixture is resting on top of ice bath add mint flavor and food coloring. Stir until well combined. Allow mixture to rest on ice bath stirring occasionally until cooled completely.

Now for the ice cream part

Before starting this next step be sure to have plenty of ice and ice cream salt on hand. I usually get a 10 pound bag of ice and 2 boxes of ice cream salt. Although not all of the ice or salt will be used it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Follow manufacturers instructions when using any ice cream maker.

Below is an example of the steps I took to making this ice cream with my electric ice cream maker.

Once the liquid had completely cooled I place the mixture into the ice cream maker canister.

Then I place the canister in the wooden bucket and put cover in place.

Inside the bucket between the canister and the bucket edges I added a small layer of ice and then a layer of salt.

Then I added another layer of ice and salt and ice and salt until it was about 5 inches above the liquid in the canister.

Run The Ice Cream Maker

I then attached the motor top, plugged it in and let it run. After about 15 minutes I turned the motor off, added the chocolate chips and restarted the ice cream maker for about 1 minute so it would stir the chips into the ice cream.
