How to Make Dehydrated Tomatoes

The Perfect Snack: Dehydrated Tomatoes
Instead of reaching for a sweet snack why not reach for some homemade dehydrated tomatoes.
That’s right…dehydrated tomatoes aka vegetable jerky!
Easily make dehydrated tomatoes right in your own home. Using a food dehydrator will allow you easily preserve garden fresh foods.
Purchasing dried foods can be pretty pricey. I highly recommend making your own dried vegetables using a food dehydrator.
Using a food dehydrator or Power Air Fryer allows you to preserve fresh foods right in your own home without added ingredients and at a fraction of the cost.
Normally, in the fall I would be canning tomatoes. Now, I prefer to dehydrate tomatoes.
Preparing Tomatoes for Drying
Lightly rub dehydrator trays with olive oil to prevent tomatoes from sticking.
Use fresh clean tomatoes free of blemishes.
I demonstrate this process by using roma tomatoes.
Cut tomatoes about 1/4 inch thick and arrange on drying tray making sure none of the tomatoes are touching.
Note: the thicker the cut the longer the drying process.
Drying Tomatoes
For the best outcome I highly recommend using a food dehydrator over using the oven.
Using a food dehydrator will make your life easier. Just pop the tomatoes into the dehydrator, push a couple of buttons and walk away.
Sure, you will want to check on them just to watch the process. It’s pretty amazing to watch the process!
The dehydrator will circulate warm air throughout and around the food resulting in a more successful dried product.
Plus, the food dehydrator will produce less energy. A food dehydrator will be cost-effective and more efficient.
Once the sliced tomatoes are arranged on the drying trays insert the trays into the dehydrator.
The ideal temperature for dehydrating tomatoes is by setting the dehydrator to 145 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 6 hours. However, drying times will vary due to food thickness.

Dried Tomatoes
After the dehydrator oven has completed check on the tomatoes. When they pop off the drying tray they are done.
If they are still moist you can put them back into the dehydrating oven and dry to desired consistency.
Storing Dried Tomatoes
Dried tomatoes can keep for months if stored properly.
You should store dehydrated tomatoes in airtight glass or plastic containers in a cool, dry, dark location. Preferably in temperatures less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
The favorable location would be the refrigerator or freezer.
Before storing dried tomatoes be sure they are cooled down and completely dry otherwise they can become moldy while being stored. Any sign of mold discard immediately.
