Presentation is a key!
Making this seven layer salad recipe in a glass bowl is a must! The most impressive dish is the trifle bowl. The trifle bowl makes an everlasting impression as the presentation allows the food to beautifully be displayed. There is something about when food looks good it tastes good. Everyone will gravitate to this beautiful bowl.

Seven Layer Salad
The most traditional lettuce used when making a seven layer salad is the iceberg lettuce because it holds up so well whereas other lettuces may go limp. Since I have not used any other type of lettuce for this recipe I can only recommend using iceberg lettuce.
There are many options available when making a seven layer salad. For this recipe I like to stick with vegetables. You will be surprised with all the options. Matter of fact, you may not even make the same salad every time as making a seven layer salad can be very versatile.
Filling Options (Choose 5)
Although the options are endless below are a few recommendations
When shopping for vegetables be sure to use firm and the freshest vegetables available.
- Onion (yellow, white, red or green onions)
- Peppers (Red, Yellow, Orange, Purple or Green)
- Asparagus
- Cauliflower
- Celery
- Cucumbers
- Frozen peas
- Sugar snap peas
- Water chestnuts
- Hard boiled eggs
- Cheese (cheddar or colby)
- Tomatoes
- Bacon
My choices include: green pepper, red onion, tomatoes, frozen peas, freshly grated colby cheese and hard boiled eggs. Wait a minute! Whoops. That’s six! Oh well, I will have eight layers but I am still going to call it a seven layer salad. Shhh….don’t tell anyone. 😉 BTW the dressing is the sixth layer and the cheese is the seventh.
Seven Layers
The lettuce is usually the first layer and the other layers after that go in no particular order.
- Prepare the lettuce by either cutting or tearing into bite sized pieces. Place the lettuce as the bottom layer.
- Chopped green peppers.
- Diced red onion.
- Cherry tomatoes cut in half.
- 12 ounces of frozen peas.
- Dressing which consists of 2 cups Hellman’s Mayonnaise and 2 teaspoons granulated sugar mixed together well and placed on top of the peas.
- Freshly grated cheese.
If you are anything like me you may make different layers each time when making a seven layer salad.
