Maine lobster can be cooked several different way but this recipe is focused on steaming the Maine lobster to perfection.

Where to Purchase Maine Lobster

We purchased our Maine lobster at our local fish market and had the fishmonger dispatch the lobsters for us. Meaning he killed the lobsters by taking a sharp knife and placing it between the first joints between the shell and eyes and firmly pressed down. This process immediately killed the lobster. While he was at it we had him remove the inners aka the tomalley. Some people really like this part of the lobster too and it can be left in if preferred. He then placed the prepared lobsters on lots of ice for our travels home.

What Size Pot Do You Need To Cook A Whole Maine Lobster?

When cooking live Maine lobsters you will need a BIG pot regardless if you have one, two or more whole lobsters. Reason so is that by having a large pot the heat will be distributed evenly and cook the lobsters to perfection.

We use this stock pot with rack to steam our lobsters and found that it cooked four 1.75 pound lobsters perfectly and could probably even hold up to six without a problem.
