How to Obtain Morel Mushrooms

There are two, well, maybe four, ways to obtaining morel mushrooms.

  • I have seen them being sold at the City Market in Missouri. Yeah, you could buy them there but the last time I checked they were being sold for $40 USD per pound. Hi-way robbery if you ask me.
  • Another way of obtaining morel mushrooms is by receiving them from a good friend but that may be slim pickings. LOL!
  • You can buy dried morel mushrooms online.
  • Another option and probably the most rewarding way of obtaining morel mushrooms is by foraging for them in the woods yourself.

The Best Place and Time To Find Morel Mushrooms

Morel mushrooms can be found in many parts of the world. We are from Kansas and Missouri and we usually forage in dense woods for morel mushrooms during several weeks in the spring months beginning as early as April. We often forage in the woods after rains and up to several days thereafter when the ground is still semi soft. There really is not a specific place we have found morels as they pop up all over in the woods and wood edges. Some people say morels can be found around ash, oak, elm and aspen trees. Or even around dead or dying trees.

Look at that beauty! The mushroom that is! 🙂

The Proper Attire For Hunting Mushrooms

Before heading out into the woods we make sure we dress appropriately. The goal is to protect our skin from being scratched by tree branches therefore we wear long pants or preferably jeans, long sleeve shirts, jackets and Ultra lightweight waterproof boots.

We always take precautions to protect ourselves before going into the woods from bringing home ticks and chigger bites. We only use this insect repellant for keeping ticks and other bugs at bay. Ever since we have been spraying our boots, pants and jackets we have not had one single tick. If by chance you happen to bring some ticks home hopefully you have a tick removing kit on hand. If not, you can get one here. Now, if you’ve ever had a tick bite you know they can itch like crazy afterwards. Try making a batch of my calendula salve as it will aid in healing and it really takes away the itch.

If you plan on foraging for mushrooms yourself be sure to take a mesh bag to collect your fungi treasures and you will need a mushroom knife to cut the stem of the shroom from the ground as well. A mushroom knife ensures you get a clean cut leaving behind the dirt that is attached to the mushroom at the base.

Hunting Morel Mushrooms

Walking the woods looking for morel mushrooms can be an addicting hobby. It’s good exercise too. Once you stumble upon one morel you won’t want to stop looking. TIP: Be careful who you tell about where you find your morel mushrooms because next year they my invade your location and take them all for themselves. Just saying. I’m not really going to get into the history about morels because the reason you came here is to get this easy recipe for preparing fried morel mushrooms.

Inspect Your Fungi Morel Mushroom Treasures

The first part to working with mushrooms is to inspect them for cleanliness and make sure they are bug free. It’s not necessary to wash mushrooms but you can brush off any visible dirt and if you just have to you can rinse the shrooms under cool water and pat dry. Often times I will rinse them because sometimes there may be some dirt in the crevices.

Weigh Mushrooms

It’s not necessary to weigh mushroom but wouldn’t it be nice to know how may ounces or pounds you collected? I like using a kitchen scale and always weigh my shrooms. It kind of makes me proud to know how many pounds or ounces I’ve found and how much money I’m actually saved foraging for these beauties myself.

Ingredients:

  • fresh morel mushrooms
  • 1 box Tempura (I buy the 8 oz box and only use part of it depending on how many mushrooms we are frying)
  • water
  • vegetable or canola oil for frying (48 or 64 ounce bottle)
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Prepare Morel Mushrooms

Clean morels by either gently brushing away any dirt or rinse under cool water then pat dry. Cut morels in half and set aside.

Prepare Batter

Note: How much batter we prepare depends on how many mushrooms we find. Sometimes we only use part of the 8 oz box of tempura (saving the rest for a later date) and adjust water to the consistency desired. So, with that said, in a medium bowl add desired amount of tempura and enough water to make a thin to medium pancake consistency batter. Stir together until well combined and lump free.

Heat Oil

Prepare a medium pot and fill with about 3-4-inches deep of vegetable oil. Heat oil to about 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Although, the thermometer I use is no longer available you can use a thermometer like this.

Frying Morel Mushrooms

Working with about 4 or 5 morel pieces at a time dip mushroom pieces into batter until fully coated. Then gently lower battered morels one at a time into hot oil. Fry mushrooms for about 2-3 minutes or until they are lightly browned.

Tip: When taking the hot food out of the oil you’ll want to be prepared. So, line a paper plate with paper towels and set aside until ready to use.

Remove From Oil

Carefully remove fried morel mushrooms from hot oil using a spider strainer. Scoop out mushrooms and place them on the paper towel lined paper plate. Salt and pepper to taste. Complete above steps until all mushrooms are fried.
