Caramelized onions make this Savory Onion Pie so wonderful. It can be served for breakfast, lunch, dinner or as a side dish.

What Makes This A “Savory Onion Pie”

Caramelized onions be it red, white, yellow and or sweet vidalia is what makes this Savory Onion Pie so wonderful. It can be served as the main dish or as a side dish. We use 3 pounds of onions. That’s right, mix it up just as long as you have 3 pounds. We all love, well at least we do in our household, the smell of onions being sauteed over the stove in a pan of butter. Ah, just thinking of it makes me hungry. One thing I like about this recipe is there is no need to stand over the hot stove and sauté the onions. What you ask?… Nope, just chop up the onions and put them in a slow cooker with the lid on. Cook on high for 6-8 hours.

Chopping the Onions

3 pounds of onions can be a bit of chopping. That is why I highly recommend using a food processor.

Check out my video below on how quick of a process it can be chopping onions. It literally took me less than 2 minutes to chop the onions for this recipe. Well, the video is only 2 minutes and 13 seconds but that includes me chatting a tiny bit so it may not even take that long.

Savory Onion Pie Recipe

Ingredients

Pie Filling

  • 1 Deep dish pie shell uncooked
  • 3 pounds onions chopped (red, white, yellow and or vidalia)
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 cup Crème Fraîche can substitute plain yogurt or sour cream
  • 4 dashes Hot pepper sauce
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Bacon and chives to garnish optional

Pie Topping

  • 1 cup Mayonnaise
  • 1 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese grated

Instructions

Prepare Onions

Slice 3 onions using a food processor and place in a slow cooker and cook on high for 6-8 hours or until caramelized to golden brown. Once the onions have caramelized drain off the juices and set aside for later. Place onions in a large bowl to cool completely.

Prepare Filling

Add crème fraîche, sour cream or yogurt to cooked onions. I like to use our crème fraîche recipe because it does not separate like sour cream. The recipe is super easy and has only two ingredients unlike sour cream or yogurt. Add a few shakes of hot pepper sauce, eggs, salt and pepper. If you feel you need a little moisture in your mixture add just a tiny bit of onion juice. You don’t want too much juice or your crust will be soggy. Stir until well incorporated and place in uncooked pie shell.

Prepare Topping

In a medium bowl combine grated Parmesan cheese and mayonnaise. Then place on top of onion pie spreading out evenly to edges of crust. To avoid crust from burning cover edges with a pie shield.

Bake

Bake in a preheated oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 35 minutes. Remove pie shield and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until top of pie is completed golden brown on top.  Remove pie from oven and allow to cool a few minutes prior to serving. Garnish with bacon and chives. The pie can be served warm, cold, or room temperature. This pie is so versatile that it can be served for breakfast, lunch, dinner or even as a side dish. Enjoy!
