How to Make Vanilla Sugar
Infuse the wonderful flavor of vanilla into granulated sugar by making homemade vanilla sugar. It’s simple!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of sugar (I use granulated sugar)
- 4 vanilla beans (Grade B * see my recommendations here)
- 1 Quart Mason jar with lid
Directions:
(A video is provided below for complete instructions)
- Slice vanilla beans down center.
- Then cut beans into three sections each.
- Add a little sugar to mason jar.
- Add two sections of the vanilla bean.
- Then add a little sugar alternating beans and sugar until gone.
- Add lid to mason jar.
- Shake jar daily.
It is important that you shake the mason jar daily as the moisture from the beans will harden the sugar inside the jar.
The beans will show signs of drying out about after one months time meaning the vanilla flavor has infused into the sugar.
You will be able to tell the beans are drying out when you shake the jar and hear the beans hitting on the inside. This is an indication your sugar is ready to use.
You can keep the sugar in the same quart mason jar or transfer into smaller jars.
When the sugar gets low replenish the jar with more sugar.
Uses For Vanilla Sugar
Flavored sugar can be used in many different ways. Add it to your coffee, use in place of regular sugar when baking to add vanilla flavoring to cakes and cookies or sprinkle over fresh fruit.
