Jump to RecipeBeeswax Pellets/Pastilles
Beeswax is a common product used in cosmetics and is derived from honeybees. For a honeybee to obtain 1 pound of beeswax it must ingest 9-10 pounds of honey and visit almost 18-20 million flowers. Absolutely amazing isn’t it!? As the ole saying goes, “Busy as a bee” proves its point. Using beeswax in lip balm recipes works as a skin softener. It aids in the healing of cracked or dry lips and prevents lips from becoming chapped.
There are three types of beeswax: yellow, white and beeswax absolute.
- Yellow beeswax is the raw product, fully refined and safe for making lip balms. This is beeswax directly from the honeycomb.
- White beeswax is naturally bleached through sunlight and moisture. It too is safe for making lip balms.
- Beeswax absolute is yellow and has been extracted from the honeycomb with solvents. I do not recommend this type of beeswax as it is processed with solvents.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is used primarily for its moisturizing effects making it ideal for chapped lips. Since coconut oil is supplied in both liquid or solid form, this recipe calls for the solid form.
Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil has been known as a folk medicine to treat many ailments back in the day. Today, it’s used to treat acne, psoriasis, sunburns and chapped skin. Jojoba oil is naturally gentle and non-irritating therefore making it suitable for all skin types. Jojoba oil is great for hydrating dry skin making it a perfect ingredient for a lip balm.
Shea Butter
Shea butter is a fat extracted from the nut of the African shea tree that is widely used in cosmetics, moisturizers, and lotions. It is solid at room temperature and when melted it has a buttery rich consistency. Shea butter is ideal for using in lip balms and body butters.
Essential Oils For Lip Balms
The following essential oils are generally safe when making lip balms:
- Camphor (intended for cold sores. Use 1-2 drops for adults only)
- Clove (very warming, use 1 to 2 drops)
- Lemon (distilled, not cold pressed)
- Lime (distilled not cold-pressed)
- Mandarin
- Orange
- Peppermint
- Spearmint
- Tangerine – my favorite!
- Tea Tree Oil (anti-bacterial, anti-viral. Use sparingly, short-term and only in adults)
- Vanilla Absolute
The above essential oils are only recommendations. You can always add your own creation or combination.

Fill lip balm tubes
Using a glass dropper, fill each lip balm container as full as you can without overflowing (if the mixture begins to thicken in the pan just reheat and continue filling containers).

I’ve been looking for a DIY natural lip balm that is creamy and not oily. This recipe is perfect, I’m definitely going to be using this from now on and I won’t need to buy any lip balms ever again. Thank you so much for this recipe!
Peggy
I love this lip balm. It is so creamy and luscious.

Thank you so much Peggy for coming back and sharing your experience with this recipe. You have made my day!
Lauren
HI! is it possible to substitute the Shea butter for anything? Either way this recipe is great!
Jett
Hi Lauren! Although I have not tried anything besides shea butter I have heard coconut butter is sometimes suggested as a substitute. If you try it please come back and let us know how it works.
Anne Marie
Hi, this sounds super incredible and i cant wait to try it out. May i know the shelf life for this n if i can add preservatives to prolong shelf life – if yes, what kind of preservative would you recommend for this recipe?
Jett
Anne Marie: This lip balm is phenomenal! I don’t know if my response will be very helpful but I have a tube of this lip balm that I use every night and keep it next to my bed. It is going on two years and it’s still the same as when I first made it. If you’re looking for shelf life I would use the date of your oils. I don’t use preservatives but I’ve heard of people using natural preservatives like rosemary and oregano extract in other recipes. I would not know the final outcome of this lip balm recipe if other ingredients were added. Sorry I can’t be of more help. Be sure to check out the Tinted Lip Balm recipe. I think you may like that one as well. https://jettskitchen.com/all-natural-tinted-lip-balm-recipe/
Debbie
It took quite some time for the beeswax to melt and using the glass eyedropper to put the mixture in the tubes was way too time consuming. However, the lip balm came out very creamy and I’ll make it again!
Tamara
Hello,
This recipe and feedback makes it inticing to make. What size tubes do you use? Do you know the total weight of combined ingredients?
Thank you!
Tamara
Jett
Hi Tamara: I use the tubes mentioned in this post and they hold a .15 ounce capacity according to the manufacturer. I’m sorry but I don’t weigh the ingredients for this recipe at this time therefore I don’t know the total weight combined. Sorry but that is a great idea!
Adrienne
I would love to try this but how would I add color so that the lip balm has a tint of color to it?
Jett
Hi Adrienne: For my next batch of lip balm I make this fall I will be experimenting myself by adding color. Adding mica powder (as displayed above in the “Products Our Readers Used In This Recipe”) can be used to add color when making lip balms. I believe adding the mica powder at the time of melting the beeswax, shea butter and oils together would be appropriate for adding a tint to the lip balm. As far as how much mica powder to add will depend on the color desired. Hope this helps. Thank you for reaching out! Jett
Jett
Adrienne: I now have a recipe to add color to the lip balm. Check out my “Tinted Lip Balm” recipe. https://jettskitchen.com/all-natural-tinted-lip-balm-recipe/

I live in Florida and tubes of lip balm melt to nothing if left in the car so I’m putting mine into roller bottles cause these are non existent. Fingers crossed.
Pat Chelin
I absolutely love this! So easy and so nourishing and lasts. This is the 3rd recipe I tried and just wow. Cant wait to do the tinted ones!!
Jett
Hi Pat! Thanks for coming back and sharing your experience. I’m so glad you like the creamy lip balm. Be sure to come back as I’d like to hear how you like the tinted recipe. Again Thank you! Jett
Kelly Doyle
Hi,
Love the recipe.
I keep getting holes at the top of the tubes.
What do I need to do differently to get those beautiful smoothe tops?
Jett
Hi Kelly:
I’m super excited that you love the recipe! It is not uncommon to get those little dimples in the tubes on top. I get them sometimes too. As the lip balm hardens it shrinks and that’s when the little dimple shows up. To avoid the dimple I use the dropper to fill my tubes and as the tube gets filled to the top with the hot balm I will slowly add a drop by drop without breaking the tension or overflowing the tube. There is nothing wrong with having a dimple but I get it; I too prefer a smooth top but that doesn’t always happen. Even though there are dimples present, with regular use the dimple will go away and the product is just as good. You can see my dimples on my “Tinted Lip Balm” recipe. Hope this helps. ohhhhh this turned out so nicely! I used Peppermint oil instead of orange, and doubled the recipe.
I’m so happy, thank you!

Hi Barb! Peppermint is a fun flavor! So glad you like the recipe. Thank you, Jett

Love this recipe!!
I substituted the coconut oil for tallow and did half jojoba and castor oil. Thank you for sharing.
Jett
Thank you Claudia! It never even crossed my mind to use tallow.
