Good dogs deserve good treats! Dehydrated liver makes excellent healthy and nutritional liver jerky treats for your dog. This is a dog(s) approved recipe!

Easy and Affordable Treats To Make For Your Dog

Have you ever bought dog food that contains pieces of freeze dried meat? I have and my dogs love those tiny pieces so much they would rather eat the freeze dried meat and leave the rest behind. Go figure!

I have also bought these freeze dried liver pieces in the past for training purposes. Dogs will do anything for these treats!

This is where I got to thinking….”I can make my own treats”! Matter of fact, I prefer to make my own treats for my fur babies.

For one thing when I make this treat I feel safe giving it to my dogs. I know there are no fillers, I don’t have to worry where this treat is made, and another reason, it’s much cheaper to make it myself.

Although my treats aren’t freeze dried my fur babies love the liver jerky treats I make for them and yours will too.

Just look at their faces! They love these treats!

How To Make Liver Jerky Dog Treats

Making dehydrated liver treats is super easy. For this recipe I use my PowerXL Air Fryer Oven and the three dehydrating trays that come with it.

For best results use a food dehydrator that has an adjustable temperature dial and will maintain a temperature of at least 130 to 140 degrees throughout the drying process. This was a recommendation from the USDA Jerky and Food Safety.

I’m sure this recipe for making liver jerky dog treats can be made in a regular oven it’s just using the Air Fryer Oven is my method of choice.

Ingredients:

  • 1 package of beef liver (4 slices of beef liver) I find mine in the meat department in their frozen section. If you can’t find it be sure to ask your butcher.

Directions:

Using unbleached parchment paper, cut to size so that it fits the drying rack trays and set aside.

Remove sliced liver from packaging. Rinse under cool water and shake off excess water.

Place meat on cutting board and using a sharp knife, carefully cut liver into pieces and place on unbleached parchment paper covered drying trays. Space pieces apart so they are not touching each other.

Any extra liver that won’t fit on all the trays place in a baggie and put back into the refrigerator until ready to make the next batch. Use preferably within 24 hours.

This next step is very important! Temperature is important when making jerky, not only for dogs but for human consumption too.

Flash Bake

To make dehydrated meats safe for your dog or dogs it is very important to “flash bake” the meat first. The flash bake will rid the meats of any Salmonella and E. coli. Therefore, don’t skip this step because we don’t want any sick doggies.

To flash bake, place trays of meat in the Air Fryer Oven and bake liver at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes.

Dehydrate

After the flash bake has completed click on the dehydrate icon. Turn the temperature between 130 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit and dehydrate meat for up to 8 hours.

Remove dried liver from trays and store in a closed container in the refrigerator for up to one week or can be placed in the freezer for up to two months.

Tip: Keep enough treats for one week in the refrigerator and place the rest in the freezer in separate baggies that will last for a week at a time.

Repeat process until all liver is dehydrated.

Didn’t make these, but wanted to cancel out the 1 star review since you updated the recipe! I wish my dehydrator had all these fancy settings, otherwise I would use this recipe!

Hi Mary: Thank you for reaching out. This recipe is not the light and airy type that will crumble. I used to buy the freeze dried liver treats for my dogs and those were crumbly. They loved the freeze dried kind but it was a bit expensive so that’s why I came up with this recipe. To get the crumbly type you would have to have a Freeze Drying Machine https://amzn.to/3R7rm4M Hope this helps.

Liked your suggestion of flash baking. Here are a few tips for your commenters that might help them.

    1. The recipe is correct. You get mold very quickly when your “treats” aren’t dry enough. When totally dehydrated, treats keep a long time but will eventually mold after many weeks Also, if you use a food saver with Mason Jars to get rid of air, the treats stay good for months.

    2. If you put your liver in a strong blender like a Ninja or Vitamix then you can pour paper thin liver liquid onto the parchment. Adjust your time . . . they will probably dehydrate quicker. These dehydrated treats can be used as a standard treat or crumbled on food. If you have a sick dog, they will often be enticed to eat food with the liver crumbles.

    3. I have done these in a regular oven . . . they work there too.

    4. Liver is a superfood for humans and dogs. Gives both more energy.

Thanks for the post. Hope this helps others with your great recipe.

Thank you very much for your tips…first time dehydrating liver for Gizmo….screwed up unintentionally by purchasing Calve’s liver instead beef liver..oops..On the good side..flash baking…swapped shelves around. the absolute best liver I ever tasted, broke my heart not to devour it all! Dehydrating the rest for Gizmo. Fingers crossed. Same as Jett getting to expensive to buy! My 16 month Aussie goes through treats like crazy! Will have to do the same with beef and chicken as well

I cooked a bunch of beef liver in my crock pot. Can I still dehydrate it using my ninja air fryer oven ? More importantly, what breed of dog is the one with the red collar? I have one just like it (rescue) and don’t know how to answer the “what kind of dog is that?”

    • Jett

I’m not sure how well cooked beef liver would dehydrate. If you give it a try let us know. The dog with the red collar is a dachshund also known as a wiener dog, doxie, doxon, badger dog or sausage dog.

I tried it, using the lowest setting 150 and set it for 3.5 hours. After 3 hours most of the pieces were dried through, but a few need some more time. Next batch was more uniform in depth, so they dried more evenly. I froze some, some were eaten by a little brown begging friend, and the rest were refrigerated. I am surprised that your little guy is a dachshund, my rescue paperwork id’ed mine as a chihuahua doxie mix. I also saw a variation called a deer-head chihuahua, as opposed to the apple-head variety. Doesn’t matter I guess – a dog is a dog is love on four legs.
