Making apple butter shouldn’t be a chore. This easy homemade recipe uses freshly peeled and chopped apples along with granulated sugar and warm spices cooked in a crockpot.

This apple butter recipe cooks for approximately seven hours in the crockpot and stirred occasionally. It is then blended using an immersion blender and then canned or rather jarred. This recipe can make up to 4 pints or nine 8-oz canning jars.

What apples make good apple butter

  • Jonadel apples are a cross between Jonathan and Red Delicious. This is the apple I got from the apple orchard and used for this recipe
  • Jonathan – tangy flavor
  • Red Delicious – has a mildly sweet flavor
  • Jonagold – honey sweet/slightly tart flavor
  • Honeycrisp – sweet/slightly tart flavor
  • Golden Delicious – has a mellow and sweet flavor
  • Gala – has a mellow and sweet flavor

Something About Jett

With the change of the season I was getting in the mood for fall and stopped at our local orchard. When I pulled up the trees were full of apples and they also had a pumpkin patch. What comes with fresh apples is the smell of baked apple cider donuts , fresh apple cider slushies (recipe to come), fresh applesauce, cinnamon apple bread and apple cobblers. So, I bought 2-pecks of freshly picked apples and headed home. Yes, I was inspired and super eager to make apple butter with some of the apples I just purchased. I’ll be saving some of the apples for making fresh apple cider slushies and who knows what else I’ll make but I’ll be sure to share any new recipes using these fresh apples. Be sure to support your local orchards this fall.

Uses for Apple Butter

Don’t be confused by the name “APPLE BUTTER” because actually there is NO butter or fat in apple butter. With that said, apple butter can be used the following ways:

  • Spread a layer of apple butter on warm toast just like you would butter
  • Spoon apple butter atop of ice cream for added flavor
  • Spread apple butter on pork chops while cooking for an added caramelization
  • For recipes that call for applesauce add apple butter instead
  • Supercharge cookie, pancake, waffle or cake batter or add as a topping

Apple Butter Recipe

Apple Butter Ingredients:

  • 5 1/2 pounds apples – for me that was about 10 large apples
  • 4 cups granulated sugar (if that sounds like too much use less sugar if desired)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions for making apple butter:

Prepare Apples

Peel apples, remove core, and chop apples. Since working with a lot of apples and to save time I highly recommend using this pull chopper or something similar. You will be amazed at all the time you have saved by using a chopper. And if you are in need of a reliable peeler I use this one.

Cook Apples

Place chopped apples into a 6-quart crockpot. In a large bowl add 4 cups of granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon allspice and 1/4 teaspoon salt and stir together. Then pour sugar and spices over apples and stir until well combined. Cover and cook apples on high for two hours. Lower the heat and continue cooking apples for 5 more hours stirring every hour.

Blend Apples

After five hours blend apples right in the crockpot using an immersion blender and blend to desired consistency. While blending don’t be alarmed because the apple mixture will start changing its color to golden brown.

Prepare for canning or jarring

I like using 8-ounce canning jars to store my apple butter. They also make great gifts as well. I first sanitize nine, maybe ten, canning jars in a large pot of boiling water. Carefully remove jars and water and place on a dry towel. Then to get the apple butter into the warm jars without making a mess I use a canning funnel and just scoop one cup of apple butter into each jar. Wipe lip of jars with moist cloth, add clean canning lids and tightly screw on rings. I then place filled jars into a large pot of boiling water with a washcloth in the water and allow the jars to rest on the cloth for about 10-minutes. Then carefully remove jars and allow to cool on a dry towel on the countertop. During the cooling process the jars should seal themselves within the hour.
