Cranberry Ginger Ale Non-Alcoholic Beverage

One Of The Most Refreshing Beverages

I created this recipe because it reminds me so much of one of my favorite summertime go-to drinks; the cherry limeade! So, if you like cherry limeades you will really like this non-alcoholic Cranberry Ginger Ale recipe. I make this beverage without the alcoholic because the kids love it too. But, I’m sure you could spike this rosy red beverage with almost anything you wanted to.

Is It Spiked?

This beverage actually starts with my Ginger Ale recipe . I guess you could say this ginger ale is spiked with some cranberry juice, a twist of lime and topped with a maraschino cherry or two. Yeah, it’s a mixed drink!

Is This A Mixed Drink

 I would probably venture to say when someone hears the words “mixed drink” they think more on the lines of a Jack and Coke, Gin and Tonic or even maybe a Bloody Mary. Without being statically correct I bet 99.9% of people would think that, wouldn’t you agree? Well, not all beverages need to have alcohol added to them to make it a mixed drink. Take this Cranberry Ginger Ale recipe for example, it contains no alcohol.

Non-Alcoholic Cranberry Ginger Ale Recipe

Ingredients for Ginger Ale

  • 8 cups filtered water or 4 16oz bottles of filtered water
  • 2 Tablespoons fresh grated ginger (that’s roughly 2-4 inches)
  • 5 Tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice (that’s about 2 lemons).
  • 3/4 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch or two of Brewers Yeast, Champagne Yeast or Wine Yeast (do not use bakers yeast)

Ingredients for Cranberry Ginger Ale

  • Ice
  • 1 52 FL OZ container Simply Cranberry Cocktail
  • 1 2 liter bottle of homemade Ginger Ale
  • 1-2 fresh limes (juiced and sliced for garnish)
  • 1 small jar maraschino cherries with juice

Instructions

Make Ginger Ale

Prepare ginger ale 3 days ahead if you want it to be fizzy otherwise it can be made the same day as making the Cranberry drink.

  1. Peel about 2 inches of ginger and grate with the microplane until you get 2 Tablespoons.
  2. Bring 1 cup of water to a boil in small sauce pan. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat and add ginger and  salt. Let cool and add lemon juice.
  3. With the kitchen funnel pour ginger water into the 2 liter bottle along with the remaining water.  (save empty bottles/lids for refilling when ginger ale is ready to be bottled). Leave a 1-2 inches head space.
  4. Add yeast. Screw on cap tightly. Gently roll bottle. Do not shake and let bottle sit at room temperature on the counter out of direct sunlight for 2-3 days until desired carbonation reached. Notice when cap is applied tightly how the bottle has some flexibility? Every day you need to check the bottle for firmness. If it is firm and sometimes hard as a rock carefully burp the bottle (slowly open container to let gasses out and then re-close tightly). Check the bottle every day to remove excess gas/pressure from the bottle. If you don’t you could have a sticky mess on your hands.
  5. Once you have reached the desired carbonation you can 1) place the 2 liter bottle into the refrigerator or 2) using the kitchen funnel fill the four empty 16 ounce bottles with ginger ale and then store in refrigerator or 3) put in Bellemain Swing Top Grolsch Glass Bottles and store in refrigerator.

Combine Ingredients

Using your favorite glass, fill with ice, be it cubed or crushed it’s your preference. I like using these mason jars because it’s kind of nostalgic! Then fill the glass half full with cranberry juice, add a squeeze of fresh lime and a couple maraschino cherries with a tablespoon of maraschino juice and top with a splash of Ginger Ale. Toss in a stainless steel straw (because reusable stainless steel straws are better for our environment) and there you have yourself a nice refreshing non-alcoholic mixed drink ever!

Is It Ginger Ale or Ginger Beer

You may hear some people refer to homemade ginger ale as ginger beer. This can be a little tricky as making ginger ale does include a fermentation process. Time can be golden when brewing ginger ale. Yes, I said brewing! It all depends on the duration of fermenting. The longer you allow fermentation to take place the more alcohol is produced which in turn produces ginger beer. That’s the bottom line. But, the goal with this recipe is to make a delicious fizzy ginger ale and not ginger beer. Therefore, this fermentation process is only a couple days.
